Memorial event will include dedication of southeastern Michigan’s newest Veteran’s Section

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich., October 14, 2008 — Resurrection Cemetery will debut an inspirational Field of Honor and dedicate southeastern Michigan’s newest Veteran’s Section on November 11, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. on the cemetery grounds. The Field of Honor will focus on military men and women from the State of Michigan who sacrificed for this country, featuring an eight-foot flag for each of the nearly 200 fallen soldiers and a scroll with each soldier’s name.
The event will begin with a procession of the Patriot Guard riders. The playing of the National Anthem will follow a parade of colors for each branch of the military. The Sulfridge Air Force Base will conduct a flyover as a tribute to Michigan’s honored soldiers. Major-General Scott West, Commander of the U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command, is the guest military speaker for the event. The Birmingham Bloomfield Symphony Orchestra will play “God Bless America,” followed by a rifle salute, to conclude the memorial event.

On March 4th 1991, four days after the end of the Persian Gulf War, ground troops from the U.S. 37th Engineering Battalion destroyed large caches of weapons found at the Khamisiyah Ammunitions Storage Facility, a site approximately 25 square kilometres in size, located some 350km south east of Baghdad. The U.S. Department of Defense initially denied that its troops may have been exposed to nerve agents during the demolitions at Khamisiyah, but following an inspection of the site by the United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM) in 1997, it emerged that the munitions destroyed on that day included more than six thousand 155 artillery shells filled with mustard gas and more than two thousand 122 mm rockets containing the nerve agent sarin and a related compound called cyclosarin. After the discovery that the destroyed weapons had in fact contained nerve agents, the Department of Defense carried out a number of special investigations <http://www.gulflink.osd.mil/khamisiyah_iii/> . The investigations involved producing mathematical computer models based on the meteorological conditions, the number and type of weapons destroyed and the positions of U.S. Army units, which were used to estimate the size and movements of the gas plume produced and the levels of nerve agents to which U.S. troops may have been exposed. It was estimated that some 8.4 metric tonnes of sarin were released during the demolition of the munitions dump, and that more than 100,000 troops <http://www.desert-storm.com/soldiers/pit.html> may have been exposed to sarin in the week following the demolition. (An independent investigation carried out by the British Ministry of Defence concluded that British personnel were not affected <http://www.mod.uk/NR/rdonlyres/33518362-99D0-45DA-B410-E9E3075D25BB/0/gviu_khamisiyah_assess2005.pdf> by the nerve agents released at Khamisiyah.)Sarin (o-isopropyl methylphosphonoflouridate) is a synthetic organophosphate compound whose chemical structure is similar to some common insecticides. At room temperature, it is a colourless, odourless and highly volatile liquid. The name sarin is derived from the names of the German chemists (Schrader, Ambros, Rüdiger and van der Linde) who, in 1938, discovered the compound while trying to synthesize stronger pesticides. Sarin inhibits an enzyme called cholinesterase, which normally breaks down acetylcholine, the neurochemical transmitter released by motor neurons onto muscles during voluntary movement, and by the nerve fibres of the autonomic nervous system that control involuntary movements such as breathing. Sarin therefore prevents the breakdown of acetylcholine after it has been released by neurons into synapses, thus prolonging the actions of the neurotransmitter. Specifically, sarin prevents hydrolysis of acetylcholine by forming a covalent bond with a serine residue in the active site of the cholinesterase enzyme. The symptoms produced by exposure to sarin are produced by the effects of the compound on the central and peripheral nervous system. These initially include a runny nose, constriction of the pupils and constriction of the muscle in the chest. These symptoms are soon followed by nausea, vomiting, difficulty in breathing, impairment of various cognitive functions and loss of control over bodily functions. The victim then becomes comatose and suffocates following a series of convulsive spasms. Someone who has absorbed a non-lethal dose can be treated with atropine, an alkaloid compound derived from deadly nightshade (Atropa belladona), which reversibly inhibits acetylcholine receptors. If this treatment is not administered almost immediately, permanent neurological damage may occur.Although sarin's mechanism of action is known, the short- and long-term effects of the compound on the central nervous system are still not understood. A new study now provides some evidence of abnormalities <http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/17/us/17sarin.html?pagewanted=1&_r=3&ref=health> in the brains of U. S. troops exposed to low levels of the nerve agent during the 1991 Gulf War. Roberta White, of Boston VA Medical Center, and her colleagues used quantitative magnetic resonance imaging to examine the brains of 26 Gulf War veterans, 13 of whom are believed to have been exposed to low levels of the nerve agent following the demolition of the weapons caches at Khamisiyah. It is one of only a small number of studies in which neuroimaging techniques have been used to investigate possible effects of exposure to sarin on brain anatomy. The results obtained from troops whose units were located within the hazard area around Khamisiyah in the days following the demolition were compared to those from troops whose units were outside the hazard area. White's group measured the volumes of various brain structures, and correlated the measurements with estimates of levels of exposure to sarin. This showed that troops exposed to sarin had reduced volumes of white matter and enlarged lateral ventricles in both cerebral hemispheres. These changes were rather subtle - those troops exposed to sarin had about 5% less white matter than those who weren't - but were found to be directly correlated to the extent of exposure to sarin. Similar results were also obtained in a recent study of individuals exposed to sarin released in the Tokyo subway system by the Aum Shinrikyo sect in 1995. This study found that, compared to controls, those exposed to the nerve agent had smaller volumes of white matter in the region surrounding the insular cortex. Earlier studies showed that Gulf War veterans believed to have been exposed to sarin performed very poorly on visuospatial and psychomotor tasks compared to unexposed troops. Impaired visuospatial and psychomotor skills were also observed in individuals who were exposed to sarin in the Tokyo subway system. Other studies performed in rats showed that sarin causes neuronal cell loss in the cerebral cortex, hippocampus and cerebellum, but much more research into the long-term effects of exposure to sarin should be carried out. Of the 700,000 U.S. troops who served in the 1991 Gulf War, at least 150,000 have complained of an undiagnosed illness whose symptoms include persistent fatigue, headaches, joint pain and nausea. The Department of Defense long denied that such a condition existed, and instead suggested that the symptoms were psychological in basis. But it now seems clear that the condition - which has variously been referred to as chronic multisyndrome illness complex, Gulf War Syndrome, or the Gulf War Illnesses - does indeed have a physiological basis. And the animal studies suggest that the onset of symptoms of exposure to sarin can be delayed, that the symptoms persist for years, and that they worsen with time. The myriad symptoms are unlikely to have a single cause <http://blog.wired.com/defense/2007/05/sarin_caused_gu.html> , and instead may be due to a number of things, including exposure to a combination of hazardous and potentially neurotoxic substances, such as depleted uranium and other nerve agents. A recent study shows that the number of closed head injuries caused by improvised explosive devices <http://neurophilosophy.wordpress.com/2007/05/14/traumatic-brain-injury-on-the-front-line/> , which may go unnoticed for years, may far outnumber the penetrative wounds caused by the devices; they could also be a contributing factor to the Gulf War Illnesses. It is therefore difficult to extricate the effects of sarin from those other substances, and from other known (and unknown) causes of neurological damage. And although the findings of White's group are inconclusive, they do suggest that exposure to sarin may also contribute to the symptoms of the so-called Gulf War Illnesses. They also suggest that exposure to low levels of sarin may lead to neurological damage without any noticeable clinical symptoms. However, one needs to bear in mind that White's group could not determine precisely the levels of sarin to which the participants were exposed; they used estimates based on the plume models developed by the Department of Defense. Nevertheless, the little we do know about the effects of exposure to sarin has serious implications for those troops who served in the 1991 Gulf War. And we mustn't forget that the Iraqi people have also been exposed to many, if not all, of the same substances to which U.S. troops have been exposed.

VFW Legislative Alert: Pass On-Time VA Funding Bill

This week, the House of Representatives is expected to take up the FY2009 Military Construction/VA Appropriations bill, but it is in danger of not passing before the Congress recesses. Some members of congress may try to attach non-related items to the bill which would hold up or even defeat final passage. VA would again be severely underfunded well into the upcoming fiscal year.
The VFW strongly supports quick passage of the bill as it provides critical increases in veterans' health care, troop housing and other resources needed for today's servicemembers.
We ask you to contact your Representatives today and urge them to pass a clean VA/MilCon Appropriations bill. Tell them that further delay hurts our veterans and our troops on the ground. Let them know that we expect them to reaffirm their priorities by doing the right thing and passing the funding bill quickly!!

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals recently ordered the Department of Veterans Affairs to pay retroactive benefits to Vietnam War veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange. The VA had fought for 16 years against paying benefits retroactively to veterans who had claimed that their leukemia was caused by the toxic herbicide.VA Refused to Pay Retroactive BenefitsAlthough the VA agreed in 2003 to provide benefits to the vets diagnosed with CLL (chronic lymphocytic leukemia) caused by Agent Orange, the VA didn't then review previous claims from vets with CLL, and it declined to pay them retroactive benefits.Court Chastises the VA in RulingJudge Stephen Reinhardt, writing the appeals court decision, chastised the VA over its longstanding opposition to paying the benefits, stating, "We would hope that this litigation will now end, that our government will now respect the legal obligations it undertook in the consent decree some 16 years ago, that obstructionist bureaucratic opposition will now cease, and that our veterans will finally receive the benefits to which they are morally and legally entitled."The opinion went on to say "The performance of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs has contributed substantially to our sense of national shame."It is not yet known how many veterans will be affected by the court's decision, or how much the VA would be paying out in benefits, or whether the VA will appeal the latest decision.Other Agent Orange-Based Disabilities PossibleAn attorney with the National Veterans Legal Services Program, Richard Spataro, noted that the appeals court ruling might finally halt the years of legal battles with the VA — if the VA doesn't appeal the case to the Supreme Court. To all Veterans who attended the celebration of The Vietnam Memorial on the 4th of August in Mt.Pleasant

It is never to late to say “Thank You”

My memory of this day ‘haunts’ me every day since then. For me, an unforgettable day.
You Veterans gave me a chance to speak to you, and after 60 years of silence to express my gratitude to you for your offerings on the battlefields around the globe. I call you all “EAGLES OF THE WORLD”, “THE SPIRIT OF THE WORLD.” I remember raising my clenched fists to heaven, shouting: “ God send Americans to save us from the hell of Nazi oppression! If you do not do this I will course You to ….to death!” So great was my despair. And God send you, and I was praying God forgive my boldness.

The cry for your help still echoes, and you are always ready to offer your lives to save the oppressed from suffering. No gratitude, no matter how great it may be, is enough to repay your suffering since it is but “words for your life and blood.”

Now I would like to contact personally those who embraced me at the Memorial after my short speech. I thank you brave Veterans for your tears which painted my face when you held me in your arms.

I would like to meet the young lady who approached me and said: “Karina, m father knows you, my father told me about your.” I was astonished that there is a person who knows me from the Upraising in Warsaw, in 19944. I would be happy to meet that man who once was a soldier as I was, a nurse, a field surgeon of necessity. I greet you, Dear Friend.

My thanks to the woman who embraced me when I was shaking/crying when the band struck the Anthem.

I thank the person who helped me get up off my knees after my prayer for soldiers in Iraq and for America. Thank you for giving me your hand.

Thanks to the man who wanted to drive me home. Thank you, Friend. I appreciated your kindness, but rejected your offer as I needed to organize my emotions by walking home alone. I would be happy to know you better and enjoy your visit with us.

Thanks to the ladies who invited me to seat at their table and share their food together with them; I rejected this kindness for the same reason as the offer to drive me home—I was very moved, and wanted to collect myself in loneliness.

The last thanks are for the gentleman who, seeing me walking on that hot day called: “Madam, madam I have cup of punch for you!” Yes, this I did not reject!
It was the offer at that moment I needed most. I was very thirsty. Your cup of punch helped me to walk the long way home. The punch I drunk, and the cup I marked with the day and the occasion, and put it among my memorabilia. It will never be forgotten.

You all who listened to my speech, and who wanted to meet me to talk, to enjoy, to discuss, you all Veterans- my “family” – you are all welcome here. I feel one of you, I would be proud and happy if I could join your union and see you, greet you at your gatherings.

My best greeting to you, God bless you all, and may He never stop blessing this Great Country and the best it unceasingly gives others: her Soldiers.

Please Help Pass the Word

WASHINGTON (Sept. 24, 2007) -- Do you know any former prisoners of war (POW) or their family members? If so, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) needs your help.

VA is once again reaching out to former prisoners of war not currently using VA benefits and services, urging them to contact the Department to find out if they are eligible for health care, disability compensation and other services.

"One of VA's highest priorities is meeting the needs of former prisoners of war," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Jim Nicholson. "They are extraordinary men and women who have endured captivity, suffered extreme deprivation and sacrificed their own freedom to preserve the freedom of all Americans." VA estimates more than 25,000 former prisoners of war are alive today.

VA is trying to contact the remaining POW's not receiving any benefits or health care through an outreach program that includes asking citizens to pass the word to veterans they know. VA also extends a helping hand to the surviving spouses and family members of former POWs, who may be eligible for certain benefits and services.

In recent years, VA has expanded benefits to all former POWs with strokes and certain common heart diseases. More than a dozen other diseases were already covered. The government's effort to inform former POWs about improvements in benefits faces a particular hurdle with older veterans who may not have been in touch with VA for decades.

A majority of former POWs are veterans of World War II, and their military service was before the use of Social Security numbers as military "service numbers." As a result, it is difficult for VA to track down those who have not been in contact with the Department in recent years.

During recent years through a nationwide outreach campaign that included direct mailings and the help of news media and veterans organizations, VA has added hundreds of former POWs to its compensation rolls, people who had not previously been receiving benefits to which they were entitled. If you know a former POW, please ask him or her to contact VA at 1-800-827-1000.

US Park Police confirm: Vietnam Veterans War memorial was vandalized

We brought you our video report on the defaced Vietnam Veterans War memorial last week. Now, the Park Police confirm this afternoon:
The unidentified substance that was found splashed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial earlier this month was the result of vandalism, the U.S. Park Police said today.
Sgt. Robert Lachance, a spokesman for the Park Police, said the investigation into the incident is continuing, but the detective on the case had ruled it an act of vandalism. Lachance said he could provide no more details because the probe is still underway.
The oily substance was first reported to police the evening of Sept. 7, National Park Service officials have said. Dark blotches were found along a stone curb at the base of the memorial for most of its length, and at least two of the wall's panels appeared to have had something splashed on them.
Park Service officials said they did not know what the substance was, and at first said it was unclear if it was the result of vandalism or some kind of accident.
Park Service spokesman Bill Line said today that maintenance and preservation crews were still working to remove the stains and marks, but were proceeding with caution to avoid further damage. He said the crews were trying to avoid pushing any residue into cracks or grout in the stone.
"We're purposefully going to take our time," he said.
Line said it could take another week or more to clean, but officials remain confident they can remove all the stains.
FYI, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is offering a $5,000 reward to anyone providing information leading to arrest and conviction in the case.

To my fellow Forgotten Eagles, veterans from every force, the awesome community that we are blessed to be living in, friends & family.

It is a humble honor that I stand before you today to personally tell you with a most grateful heart to say “THANK YOU” from the bottom of our
hearts, for all the loving & caring concern, words of encouragement, the kind of support I never even knew existed, the hugs, handshakes, or even a slight nod or a silent prayer said in our behalf meant more to us than you’ll ever know. It is all of this together that has gotten us through the most difficult year of Dennis’ & my families lives.
Thanks to all of you who have made a difference in our lives to help us get through a time when we didn't know how we were going to get through this tragic loss of Dennis, but we did & here we all stand today to honor and respect his memory along with so many others.
You know when Dennis first got his Harley Road King, he was like a little kid with a new toy, which it was. But he was also searching for something. I’m not sure if he even knew what it was he was looking for, besides a group to ride with, being disabled there was to much time on his hands, he needed to have a purpose, to be constructive.
Well believe me when he found the Forgotten Eagles website that's all we heard about at home, it got to be on obsession, we couldn't even use the computer during this time until he was done doing whatever it was he was doing. Then one day he tells me that they wanted him to start a chapter here in the Copper Country with him as president. I thought “Oh good now he has something to keep him busy”, what I didn't realize yet is what your Forgotten Eagles Chapters stood for. You were fellow veterans & even non veterans helping Michigan veterans & their families get the help they needed, whether it was information, monetary help or being the most wonderful support system I hove ever encountered, Thank you! And much, much more. Plus you rode motorcycles! That was the biggest plus ever, he could ride in the wind with all of you and enjoy what he was doing.
This is when Dennis' obsession turned into an enthusiastic passion, & I’m proud to say he did start a Chapter of the Forgotten Eagles here in the Copper Country which as you can see I proudly represent now and will keep the family traditions with Kylie & Greg, we will all proudly represent & support our veterans and their families. After all it is our military forces & their families who sacrifice so much to keep our nation free & safe from harmsway.
Thank you for giving Dennis that missing piece of his life that he needed to be useful & constructive to help others. He truly is riding in the wind with all of us now.

Purple Heart Stamp released for the third time

The Postal Service dedicated the newest Purple Heart stamp Tuesday during a ceremony at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in WashingtoPostal employees are starting to push to make the Purple Heart Stamp a “Forever” stamp. If anyone wants to do the same, they should write to:

Retired Gen. Colin Powell awarded Purple Hearts to two wounded soldiers during the event.

The 41-cent Purple Heart stamp went on sale nationally yesterday. It’s the third time the stamp has been issued.

“This stamp is an excellent way to honor the great men and women who are dedicated to serving our nation,” Powell said. “To issue it a third time says a lot about how much we as Americans value the sacrifices that have paid for our freedom.”

PMG Jack Potter joined Powell in paying honor to our nation’s military service members at the Purple Heart ceremony. “This stamp has touched our nation and its people so deeply,” said Potter. “It’s not only the stamp that resonates so strongly, it’s what the stamp represents.”

This year is the 75th anniversary of the Purple Heart medal. It is also the 225th anniversary of the Badge of Military Merit, the predecessor to the Purple Heart medal, which was established and awarded by Gen. George Washington Aug. 7, 1782.

I can't thank all of you enough for the wonderful demonstration of brother and sisterhood during the RAM, the Freedom Ride and the weekend at the Loyal Riders clubhouse in Houghton Lake. Brief History of Forgotten Eagles.

The origins of the Forgotten Eagles dates back to the days when our charter members were affiliated with Rolling Thunder.
With all the other service organizations in Michigan, There was none solely dedicated to receiving a full accounting for our POW-MIA's. Tom Wall, a visionary, a biker and combat wounded Vietnam veteran brought Rolling Thunder to Michigan to fill this void. With Tom at the helm in Michigan we grew into a strong, statewide branch of a national organization consisting of veterans and like minded individuals who wanted to correct the mistakes made in Vietnam and make sure that no American soldier was ever left behind again.
At the time that Tom had to step down for personal and business reasons, Terry Nelson took the reins and during this time frame Rolling Thunder was undergoing some drastic changes in policy and rules enforcement.
After attending a national conference Terry brought back the rule changes and had the it soon became apparent that the membership would suffer and not only in numbers. Under Terrys' leadership and with his hard work behind the scenes, he came up with a plan that would allow us to continue with our goals and mission unencumbered by the rules of a national organization that held little pertinence to our efforts in aiding Michigans' veterans.
So late in 2001 while a large number of our members seeking better answers, Terry told us to be patient and within three month, he along with the ideas of other state officers and legal help from personal friends, we were transformed into a legitimate non-profit 501C organization and Forgotten Eagles took flight.
Under Terrys' leadership we have grown to having four chapters statewide and are now concentrating our efforts within the State of Michigan. The Forgotten Eagles are now well known to our legislators, and at our Veterans Homes and hospitals, and more importantly we will stand up to protect the rights and privileges that each and every veteran in Michigan has earned through their service and all the while seeking an accounting for our POW-MIA's. We do all this through our annual Ride Around Michigan, The Freedom Ride, raffles, auctions and any other type of fund raiser that will result in helping our veterans. And the rest is history.
